Overview

I, Chris, am in the process of writing a book, of which this website is a brief, albeit fragmentary, summary. It's the fruit of a process that began about ten years ago. I grew up in the extreme right wing of the evangelical movement. The rest of this site is therefore as much personal as it is theological. Note that apart from the dogma of the black heart (fallen man), which remains more or less firmly rooted in the world of the free churches, my experience in the extreme right wing (frankly sectarian) is clearly not representative of the evangelical world in general.

I was so brainwashed by my environment that it took me about five years of study (2016-2021) to wrestle my way – millimetre by millimetre – to the intellectual realisation that, biblically speaking:

divorce was a legal practice, and
man is not born depraved, but human.

I can still see the disbelieving eyes of an acquaintance who could not understand what was so groundbreaking about these truisms. However, these two realisations truly liberated me and fundamentally changed my life. The following pages (especially B: Polygamy & divorce in the Bible, respectively I: Man according to Mani and Augustine) skim over these, my theological discoveries, which I will elaborate on in my book. Something very interesting: I have never been led to question whether the Bible is true or not; I have only been led to discover that it does not say what the church makes it say.
